Fist Up to Books! Black Detroit – A People’s History of Self-Determination

Black Detroit – A People’s History of Self-Determination, by Herb Boyd (2017)

Award-winning journalist Herb Boyd chronicles the fascinating history of Detroit through the Black experience, weaving themes of resistance and heritage throughout. Was interesting seeing his mentions of Milton and Richard Henry (aka Gaidi and Imari Obadele) as ‘among Detroit’s radical leaders,’ both of whom I discuss at length in my upcoming memoir, #BlackPowerBlackLawyer. He also fleetingly mentions the New Bethel incident, which I describe in my upcoming book as “Attack on Aretha Franklin’s Daddy’s Church.” Black Detroit is a fitting prelude to more in depth information on the legendary #HenryBrothers, as well as another son of #Detroit who ended up becoming Mayor of Jackson, MS, Attorney Chokwe Lumumba.
