Chocolate City: A History of Race and Democracy in the Nation’s Capital, by Chris Myers Asch and George Derek Musgrove (2018). This heavyweight book traverses four centuries of race and democracy right here in the nation’s capital – the place I’ve always (until recently) affectionately referred to as #ChocolateCity. (Spoiler alert – I talk about my view of Chocolate City in my upcoming memoir, #BlackPowerBlackLawyer). As a native Washingtonian, it was nostalgic reading Asch and Musgrove’s book. Anyone interested in learning the nuances of DC’s national attention and local #activism should check out the book.
